PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN——Question. I keep seeing that the body can only absorb about 35 grams of protein in a meal. Im getting ready to start pushing myself to hit 125 grams in about two weeks. Does anyone have a definitive answer on this? Like, if i did 50 grams at one meal would it be a waste as body can only absorb 35 at a time?

Yoh cottage cheese or Greek yogurt has a fair amount of protein. Or tofurkey or tofu. I don’t like animal protein either except for sometimes fish

How do you make your tofu Cindy?

YOh for a snack I could eat extra firm tofu by itself like cheese. But normally I sauté my tofu in olive oil and nutritional yeast with a sprinkle of salt

I will try that. What does the nutritional yeast do? Is it just for flavor?

Yoh it’s a nice flavor but it also has a dash of protein and also some vitamins and minerals

About 3g protein per tbsp

Thanks Cindy def going to try that! Cheesy IVE been trying to up my calories to 1100-1200 but the scale isn’t liking it. I went out to eat yesterday first time with actual food not salad and scale is up today. Hoping its the sodium as i was guessing when trying to input food. It’s the adrenal failure that is such an issue with metabolism…well and mtfhr mutation also i suppose. It’s zero fun. I wish i could eat 2000 calories a day. I always get enough water. I think the fiber may be part of my problem. Im deficient in vegetables and fruits. Sighhhh. Wish i was one of those Uber rich people that had a fancy chef that could just figure it all out for me and prepare it and do the dishes😂

I'mma follow this thread because I've been trying to up my protein intake. I did manage to hit 70g today! Though I'm gonna start my fast again after I'm done my can of Starry (I was craving ngl)... might have the smallest bit of steak later just to squeeze some more protein in with my remaining calories. Would be a shame to let it go bad, anyway. lol

Cyrus, im not going to start the protein uptake for couple weeks. Doing it in preparation for surgery at end of July. Hoping it will make my recovery better, faster and cleaner🫣

Did your doctor give you the number 125 to aim for? That just seems really high. Especially since you will be basically bedridden after surgery. If you’re going the protein powder route, that’s processed, not clean.

JB-Yes the surgeons office wants me to be around 125 prior to and post surgery. Aids in recovery apparently. I think the standard to shoot for generically (not surgically related) is something like 0.8Xbody weight so in my case as i am now that would put me at 116 grams per day. I struggle to be over 70 unless im really concentrating on it. I drink Orgain protein shakes an awful lot of the time for breakfast. 160 calories 30 grams…

The standard is .8 x your weight in kg. That's not the same thing as pounds, like Americans unfamiliar with metric measurements twist it. Seventy grams is fine for day to day, unless you're training for a marathon or working out several hours a day. I usually get between 50-75g and have no issues with workouts, energy, or maintaining muscle. Everyone's protein needs are different, but most of the mega-protein pushing comes from companies trying to sell product.

Got it. My own doc wants me around 100 grams but im more like you JB i usually hit between 60 and 70ish. It’s just this upcoming surgery. Want the fastest best recovery possible so am going to obediently be following directions. Ive been thinking about you though, how are your folks? Did a good solution present itself?

Parents are selling their house (with yard and garden) and moving into a condo. Mom's arthritis is bad now, and they refuse to go the nursing home route. Her vegetable garden was her joy for decades, so we're going to keep tabs on her mental health. It's just weird seeing my parents as aging and mobility-limited.

Im sorry. I totally understand. My mother became 100% financially dependent on me when i was 35 and she just progressively declined for next 20 years. It’s sad. Mobility is so key in aging. Is it possible your mom could have a raised garden on her patio (if there is a patio?). I hope you have more family support. I had no one. Just me. My brother refused to help (he was still trying to get his act together but even when he finally did refused to help). It’s a mental mind (*(& sometimes.

Hi, I just “geeked” out and watched a YouTube video from Peter Attia and Don Layman that might really help you understand the whole protein issue especially if you’re a “mature” adult 😉 I am 58 and really wanted to understand this subject so it helped me a lot. I’m not going to lie it was a very long video and that particular info was towards the end. I actually listened to the whole thing twice while doing other stuff. I am a nerd about learning for myself. I have been dieting my entire life and I wish I could have been able to do my own research to have saved myself a lot of wasted time much earlier in my life. I want to be able to teach my grandkids what I wish I knew when when I was raising their parents.
