Well I went out and bought some ketone strips today. I know they are not fool proof but I figure for ten bucks it is a decent measure of where I am at. Man I am hopin to see some dark colors on the stips. Wish me luck!!

Hey I wanted to get back to you on the ketone issue. A normal result is going to be negative with little to no color change on the strip. Now, the darker the color the more ketones that you are spilling in your urine. Obviously, the darker the bettter for induction as ketones are a byproduct of lipid metabolism. The only warning though is that there are many ways for the body to "get rid" of keytones. The most prevalent method is respiration. So you will actully exhale keytones in you breath. Many MDs will smell the breath of their diabetics in the ER to see if they are in keytosis as keytones have a very specific and recognizeable odor. The second means is through sweat. Then finally the third way to "get rid" of keytoes is in the urine. The reason we use these strips is it is the easiest and cheapest way of measuring the keytone excreation activity in the body. I hope this helps.

So relating to that info - question: Does exercise where you are both sweating a lot and drinking lots of water (= more urine) actually then cause your strips to read fewer keytones as a result?

I would imagine that the answer to that would be yes. Here is why... Although exercise is going to increase your metabolism of lipids and proteins you will also use some keytones in the process as well. However, durring exercise your respirations will go up and you will still be excreting ketones in the breath. Then more water intake would basically dilute the urine and make the concentration of ketones in the urine smaller. I dont know how great of an impact it would have on the testing but i would imainge it would result in a lower level of ketones in the urine. Thus...keep excercising, keep drinking lots of water, and dont put too much weiht on the ketone strip results. It is just the light of the light-house not a GPS.

I am unsure if they are availible in the ukl but I assume you coudl buy them online. One of the branded strips is called Ketostix. It is made by Bayer. In fact here you go. http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_3657_ketostix-50-strip-pack.html They are for sale there. Hope this helps

caity: They can be purchased online from a number of vendors (Amazon), in the U.K. it seems that Boots can sell them, see the discussion here: http://www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=1130 This is a Low Carb in the U.K. FAQ that seemed pretty cool: http://www.low-carb.org.uk/emailFAQ.htm

NICE man! NICE! Keep it up! Induction does funny things to the body. I remember some serious sweats and a bit of moodiness, but after a while it really does feel normal. After a while, I would sit in my office chair and actually think I was feeling my metabolism burning like a hellfire. Sounds dramatic but I'm serious. WAY to go!
