I am pleased to have dropped 2 pounds after that huge gain from last week. I will say that my eating this past week has definitely not been stellar. This has much to do with context. Despite my non-perfect eating I am pleased to log in a good loss. I am not pleased to be in the 200s again. Next week. Things should shake down to normality this up coming week so I anticipate I will lose weight while eating well!

This past week has been very difficult. Yesterday was the year since my husband died. Tuesday my children, grandchildren, sister and the spouses celebrated Dave's birthday and our anniversary with a family supper of comfort foods and favorites of Dave's followed by a 4 team Euchre tournament. Euchre was Dave's favorite card game. The most fun team was my father in law (89 yr old-an old pro at the the game) and my grandson (12 yr old-first time player). They came in second. Believe me none of us let other people win! Their first game they lost 0-10. The next game they came back from a 0-7 deficit. And the last game was at 9-9 and then they lost the hand to come in second. I handed out trophies that Dave and I had won at other Euchre tournaments. We will do this again with the trophies coming back to be won again.

On Wednesday night, we gathered again. This time we sorted through the 300+ T-shirts Dave had collected over 40 years. There were ones that held strong memories as well as ones he seldom wore. Each of the 7 of us (his dad, me, our two kids and two grandchildren and my sister-who grew up in my family after our parents died) chose 36 shirts to be made into individual blankets. Very emotional but all of us handled the situation well. The shirts are in my basement labelled with the person's name and ready for the blanket maker.

The comfort food included shrimp and homemade cocktail sauce, a 10 pound bone in ham cooked in the wood stove, scalloped potatoes that are very decadent, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, roasted asparagus, wax bean and raisin salad and homemade white dinner buns. No dessert. The ham and potatoes were particularly delicious and I definitely ate a lot of the ham. We had this meal for two nights. Eating on plan was not a priority. It did mean that I ate 400 calories extra per day and still managed to lose.

Next week is my father in law's birthday. Other than that, the week ahead should be ordinary. I am looking forwards to returning to my routines.

Oh gosh, the teeshirt session sounds very emotional. The food sounds amazing and totally justified. And omg, i love euchre. My favorite card game too.

What a wonderful way to honor your husband. The t-shirt blankets are a great idea. So much love!

Celebrating your husband’s birthday with family called for comfort foods. You’re such an inspiration

Thank you all for your kind words. Our family tries to be deliberate in our decisions of marking events. We definitely did not want to mark the day that Dave died other than to acknowledge it to each other. We have always marked our anniversary and Dave's birthday so it felt wrong not to. Once we decided to mark it we decided how best to recognize Dave - family, food and cards were important to him. Comfort food seemed the only way to go with so many raw emotions. Besides they were favorites of Dave's! The T-Shirt part was just so hard to figure out what to do with his many, many shirts. We agreed they couldn't just be given to charity - it felt disrespectful to Dave. The blankets allowed Dave and his shirts to be honoured without having them hanging in our closets. I am grateful we only had to do this part once.
